Witty Business cards

These are some interesting and humorous business cards. When I was researching business cards for our last project, branding, I encountered some unique ones and thought it would be cool to share some of them on this blog. When you think about each particular jobs, the cards makes more sense.

Beautiful Paper cut out maps :D

I was researching for paper cut out maps to get inspirations for my final project and I found these amazing customised maps! It is amazing to see a sheet paper designed and craft out so beautifully. I feel so bad to have wasted so many papers! Someone should do a series of paper cut out art out of all the waste(clean!!) paper that we produced on the 8th floor!!!!

Illustrated Maps

To add to my last post, here is a large compilation of maps I came across while researching today! I love all these pieces and will be using them as major inspirations for the style of my own 2 W. 13th mapping project. Combining quirky detail landmarks with an almost vintage-like & soft colour palette, each of these artists' maps are really full of personality.

Maps, Maps, Maps!

While researching for our new "Foundation Year at Parsons: 2W13" project today, I came across these hand-illustrated maps done by a Canadian illustrator named Marisa Seguin. She mapped many cities such as Vancouver, Venice, Paris, San Francisco, and Milwaukee. What drew me to these maps was her colorful use of watercolors as well her interesting "flat" symbol-shapes. The typography gives the maps a handcrafted feel and I really like the artsy quality of these maps, especially the one of Paris - the color combination in that one is just gorgeous!

Cole Haan Subway Ad Campaign.

I saw Cole Haan's new subway ad campaign recently and thought it was really cool how they customize it to New York and New Yorkers, with interesting stories which you can interpret to mean different things depending on how you read it.

Here's a link, but it doesn't have the stories. I think you'll have to go find the train that carries the ad to see that.

Connection between movie and fashion

So the movie "The Hunger Games" is based off of Susan Collin's novel by the same name. The city in the novel is described as a pioneer in avant-garde fashion. The taste of the citizens of the Capitol is often depicted as artificial, exaggerated, and disturbingly colorful. A collaboration between "The Hunger Games" and Rodarte, one of the biggest names on the runway, proved to be an interesting partnership, especially to join forces on designing a blog extending off of the original Capitol website.

movie proxy website

I was searching for movies that are in theaters this week, and I found a proxy website of the Capitol, a city featured in "The Hunger Games".
The design of the website is very futuristic and unique from other movie websites in which all information is aligned horizontally (as you scroll down the webpage, you will see a page-scroller that directs you to the right). The design of the data and eccentric graphs are also interesting to analyze.

Typography Scarves

While looking at wearable typography, I found a brand called The Little Factory based in Hong Kong that makes typography scarves. These scarves aren't going to keep you warm in the winter, but they are another example of how typography works its way into our everyday lives.

There are more colors and styles on their website here!

Typography as Jewelry

Etsy designer Jen Murse has gotten a lot of positive feedback on these typography necklaces and rings made from laser cut acrylic. Not only can you have a favorite type, but you can also wear it as an accessory.

Her Helvetica necklace has been the most popular, and also comes in both red and black.

Murse's Kern rings are the cheapest at $15, and the necklaces run at $22; only a fraction of the price of the real font!

You can check out more of her work here.

Word as Image

This project is called "Word as Image" (designed by Ji Lee). The prompt was to "create an image out of a word, using only the letters in the word itself." It's simple and imaginative, I think she did an amazing job. There's a video installation that goes with it, definitely something to check out.
